New technology has been used in the hunt to discover gold in Australia, reports ABC Science.

Scientists have been using the technology on a 400-km long area between Stawell and Cobram in western and northern Victoria.

The navigation technique of bats was the idea behind the development of the apparatus, which is already being used to discover gas and oil.

GeoScience Victoria's Kathy Hill said: "We can get quite exciting images from the surface down to about 40 km below the earth's surface and actually for the first time directly see faults and structures in the deep sub-surface below our feet in Victoria."

The company also reported that there could be up to 200 tonnes of gold deposits lying so far undetected in Victoria.

GeoScience Victoria was created in February 2004 with the aim of attracting explorers to the area and promoting Victoria as a place for investment.
