At the Centre for Proteomic and Genomic Research in Cape Town, a protein microarray life sciences company has placed its first APiXTM Colormetric Protein Array Reader, reports OBBeC.

Gentel Biosciences said the technology in the reader uses a gold particle-enhanced silver crystal deposition in order to detect and quantify microarrays.

Bryce Nelson, Gentel's vice-president of research and development, said: "Gold particle-enhanced silver crystal deposition enables multiplexed sandwich immunoassays with superior sensitivity and reproducibility compared to fluorescence-based microarrays and ELISA."

He added that the 96-well colorimetric system will also help customers who want to move from ELISAs to multiplexed assays.

Gentel Biosciences is a surface chemistry company founded in 2000. Since then it has been given over $2 million (£1.077 million) in funding from the National Institutes of Health.

It focuses on protein microarray product excellence and recently bought the protein chip platforms from pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline.
